Toutes les enchères / Art Ancien / Byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) - Goldish silver leaf
An impressive tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) depicting a refined riverside pavilion scene in the Tosa School style, set against a goldish silver leaf background with a soft aged patina. At the center, an open aristocratic pavilion stands on a narrow outcrop surrounded by calm waters. The structure is elegantly adorned with painted panels and vivid green sudare blinds. Inside and along the veranda, Heian-era nobles gather in richly detailed traditional court attire. On the left, a pair of ox-drawn court carriages 御所車(gosho’guruma) wait beneath pine trees 松 (matsu), while noblemen, ladies, children, and attendants stroll along the riverbank. A maple tree with bright autumn foliage and a graceful weeping willow add a seasonal touch to the composition. Lustrous goldish silver leaf clouds drift across the scene, with a distant mountain range rising along the horizon. Executed in ink and colour on mulberry paper surrounded by a goldish silver leaf background with a rich aged patina, the screen is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a slender grey trim and a wider black trim. Enclosed in a black lacquered wooden frame with metal protective hardware. Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period / Early Meiji period) Dimensions: Total width: 365 cm (2 x 62.3 cm, 4 x 60.1 cm); Height: 172.6 cm Considering its age, in a very good restored condition, with minor signs of wear consistent with age on both sides. Restorations include touch-ups to the silver leaf along the hinges and repapered patches on the reverse. Please refer to the photos for a detailed condition reference. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
