Bruno FERT (Born in 1971) Sûbâ - Le Chemin - N 31°47’5’’ E 35°7’26’’ 07.1948 The Absent, 2016 Fine Art print on Hahnemühle Ultrasmooth paper, title and date typed in the margin 32 x 32 cm (40 x 50 cm) THE ABSENTEES In 1948, the creation of the Hebrew state triggered the first Israeli-Arab war and the exodus of more than 700,000 Palestinians to neighboring countries. What remains today of their towns and villages emptied of their inhabitants? It is to answer this question that I went to Israel: to find and photograph the vestiges of these ghostly localities disappeared in the whirlwind of the 1948 war. This report is a journey through time; a visual pilgrimage to the origins of the refugee issue. These images are a testimony of a pivotal moment in the history of the region whose consequences are today at the heart of our current affairs. Bruno Fert — Documentary Photographer Bruno Fert develops a deeply humanistic body of work devoted to exile, to migrations and to the traversed territories. From vanished Palestinian villages to the precarious refuges of migrants, he photographs less the event than its traces. With Passages, he continues this work on the roads of exile, revealing in the landscapes the marks left by those who try to reach Europe. A precise and silent photography, where the landscape becomes a bearer of memory.
