Bruce Lee Personally Owned Roman Chair

Bruce Lee's original Roman chair exercise apparatus, constructed of black-painted tubular metal with a mint green upholstered stomach pad and heavy tape wrapped around the foot pad at the bottom. Overall measures approximately 48" long x 15" wide x 18" high. Shows age and use, including wear to the upholstery and metal frame. This piece of exercise equipment is primarily used to strengthen and develop the lower back through a form of backward sit-up, with the user bending over the central padded support and lifting the body upward. The accompanying documentation describes its use in Bruce Lee's physical conditioning and discusses his recovery from a serious back injury in 1970. From the collection of Herb Jackson, whose well-documented friendship with Lee began when he trained in Jeet Kune Do at Lee's Los Angeles martial arts academy. Jackson was a first-generation Jeet Kune Do student, close friend, confidant, and custom training equipment maker for Bruce Lee. Before Lee's move to Hong Kong, he gifted many pieces of his martial arts training equipment to Jackson. Includes a signed certificate of authenticity (COA) from Herb Jackson's son, Mark Ashton-Jackson, who received the Roman chair by descent. Also includes a detailed letter of authenticity and provenance dated May 25, 2018, stating: "This stomach pad was given directly to Herb Jackson from Bruce Lee. Herb Jackson was a close friend, student and confident of Bruce Lee. Herb Jackson handed this down to his son, Mark Ashton-Jackson." The accompanying letter further identifies the Roman chair as a gift from Bruce Lee to Herb Jackson in or around 1968, noting Jackson's close friendship with Lee and his participation as one of Lee's private backyard students in Los Angeles during the mid-to-late 1960s.
