Title page featuring the title and author’s name in handwritten facsimile. Numerous black-and-white and color illustrations, including several full-page ones. First edition of this major work by Yves Bonnefoy (1923–2016), blending poetic reflection, intellectual autobiography, travel writing, and art history. In it, Bonnefoy develops the concept of the “arrière-pays,” an imaginary space glimpsed behind reality, in dialogue with numerous works of art, both ancient and modern. Volume 17 of the renowned “Les Sentiers de la création” series published by Skira. Dust jacket shows scuffing, tears, and missing sections, particularly on the lower part; interior appears to be in good condition.
