Bold Moonstone, Onyx and White Gold Bracelet, German, c. 1980s

Decorative forms from the past were revived several times over the graduated 19th and 20th centuries. The 19th century loved Renaissance and Baroque forms, and Gothic and Rococo forms were also reinterpreted and varied. It was therefore only logical that the goldsmiths of the 20th century also repeatedly drew on design ideas from previous eras. In the 1980s, the cool, crystalline style of Art Deco enjoyed particular popularity. The glamorous design language fitted in well with the life-hungry decade with its desire for extravagant forms. Not only did original antique pieces of jewellery fetch astonishing prices in the art trade in those years, but new creations in the spirit of the 1920s also emerged. This bracelet is a typical example of this fashion. However, it is an inspiration rather than an imitation that we can observe here, and so the bracelet does not hide its time of origin. Rather, it is a variation on historical models to which homage is paid here as a contemporary tribute. The white gold bracelet features rectangular, table-shaped cut onyxes in simple white gold frames, which are set between clasp-shaped links. These each carry two fine moonstones on top of each other. We are familiar with the use of onyx as a contrasting counterpoint to white metal and light-colored gemstones from Art Deco jewelry designs. However, the prong settings of the moonstone cabochons are entirely contemporary. Excellently crafted and made from selected luxurious materials, the bracelet is a stylish eye-catcher from the 1980s with nostalgic reminiscences of Art Déco.
