Toutes les enchères / Livres, Cartographie & Manuscrits / Biondo - Roma Ristaurata et Italia Illustrata - 1548

Very rare third edition (the first is 1542) of this famous work by the historian and humanist Flavio Biondo (1392–1463), the first to coin the term "Medioevo". This work provides a richly abundant topographic source for the study of the city of Rome. The "Italia illustrata" constitutes an expansion and continuation of the "Roma ristaurata": it is a true geographic guide to Italy, divided by regions. Flavio Biondo, Roma ristaurata, et Italia illustrata. Translated into good vernacular Italian by Lucio Fauno, Venice, for Michele Tramezzino, 1548. PP.: (XXXII), 241, (XX su XXII). COMPLETE, except for the last leaf with the printer's mark. A copy with sheets in overall discrete condition, but with widespread damp staining, especially on the last sheets. The last three sheets show a small lacuna with the loss of a few letters of text, while the last sheet has been pasted (probably to reinforce it) to the rear flyleaf and shows greater loss of text. Lacuna at the outer margin of sheet no. 9, with loss of a single letter of text. Small tear to the title page. Seventeenth-century binding in full parchment with manuscript title on the spine. Some wear and loss along the edges, but overall fairly well preserved. The rear white flyleaf is missing.
