Bernard Buffat — Pieza única de autor / Studio Pottery...

Bernard Buffat — Unique Piece / Studio Pottery - Double ceramic art container composed of a pair of jars with lids and a central handle. FRENCH ARTIST CERAMICS We are looking at a unique piece by Bernard Buffat in which the artist transcends the practical function of the container to turn it into a small sculptural construction. The union of the two bodies through the central handle, the formal correspondence of the lids, and the material treatment of the glaze confer the whole a marked aesthetic presence. The composition fuses functionality with sculptural language, within a conception of ceramics in which form, surface, and glaze participate jointly in defining the work. We are looking at a unique piece by Bernard Buffat in which the artist does not merely resolve a practical function, but transforms a domestic object into a small sculptural construction. The joining of the two containers, the symmetry of the lids, and the glaze treatment make it function both as an object of use and as a collectible piece. ABOUT THE ARTIST Bernard Buffat began his training as a potter by staying at the Poterie des Chals with Jean-Marie Paquaud. Subsequently, he worked with René and Madeleine de Valence at La Grange aux Potiers, a period during which he progressively developed his own language. He was awarded the title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Best Craftsman of France), a recognition granted for technical excellence within French crafts. Available records place his distinction in 1972, while documentation from the French Ministry of Education later lists him as Meilleur Ouvrier de France in the pottery specialty. His production combines utilitarian pieces with works of more liberated conception, giving special importance to form, modeling, and the treatment of glazed surfaces. In parallel to his studio production, he created personal and unique pieces, identified by his characteristic monogram and the inscription “Pièce unique.” DESCRIPTION OF THE PIECE Unique piece by Bernard Buffat, made in glazed ceramic and composed of two globular-shaped containers with differing proportions. Each one has a domed lid topped by a rounded knob. Both bodies are joined by a central arched handle, which provides unity and sculptural strength to the ensemble. The surface presents a strong material character finish, with a rich combination of green and blue-green glazes, ochres, and earth tones. These chromatic variations range from darker, earthy areas to zones of greater chromatic intensity, creating a changing effect that gives it a strong decorative presence. AUTHENTICITY: On the base of one of the containers you can observe the Bernard Buffat pictogram, accompanied by the inscription “PIÈCE UNIQUE,” as shown in the photographs. DATED: ca. 1970 – 1980 Due to its stylistic formal characteristics, it is dated to the 1970s-80s, but Buffat’s activity at La Grange aux Potiers is documented during different periods in the 1960s and early 1970s, although his production continued later in his own workshop. DIMENSIONS • Total height, including the handle: 25.5 cm • Jar 1, maximum height with lid: 23 cm • Jar 2, maximum height with lid: 20 cm • Total width of the ensemble: 33.5 cm • Mouth diameter: 15.5 cm CONDITION Very good overall condition.
