BAUMANN (Émile). — *L'Excommunié*. Paris, Éditions Bernard Grasset, 1939. In-12, paperback, cream-colored cover printed in blue, untrimmed copy. First edition of this novel by Émile Baumann (1868–1941), published by Grasset in 1939. The BnF bibliography confirms this date as that of the first publication of *L'Excommunié*. One of the 16 special copies on Lafuma pure-fiber vellum, the only high-quality paper used, comprising 10 copies numbered 1 through 10 and 6 non-commercial copies numbered I through VI. Non-commercial copy no. IV, and therefore one of the six non-commercial copies on Lafuma pure-fiber vellum. An exceptional copy, featuring on the half-title page a beautiful autograph dedication signed by the author: “In memory of dear Adrienne, For Émilie and Adolphe, this book where they will find a corner of Provence, with all my affection, Émile Baumann” This dedication is particularly interesting for its reference to Provence, the setting in which the story begins: Baumann depicts his encounter there with Élie Radec, an elderly excommunicated priest living in seclusion. A review published as early as 1939 describes this Provençal setting in detail. Provenance: Émilie and Adolphe, to whom the author dedicated the book. Some flaws on the cover: spine slightly faded, small tears and perforations on the spine, particularly toward the top, creases, and minor scuffing; interior well-preserved. Copy remains in its original paperback condition.
