A highly decorative Chinese wedding basket, also known as a stackable basket. The basket weighs kg, is 60 cm high, and the diameter of the basket is 35 cm. The baskets are woven from bamboo slats. The handle is made from a thicker split bamboo rail. In the photo you can clearly see the characteristic bamboo stripe in the handle. The basket consists of a base basket with two loose baskets stacked on top and a lid. The basket dates from the 1960s or 1970s of the previous century. It is a beautiful specimen that here and there shows decorative weaving (see photos of the decorative edge of one of the baskets, and the decorative weaving on the shaft). There are cracks of the bamboo at the bottom of the basket and part of the lid edge (see photos). Due to drying of the material, it sometimes breaks. The basket is still solid and stable! These layered baskets originally come from China and have been used since the Qing Dynasty (19th and early 20th centuries). Traditionally they were used during engagements and weddings. Family members filled the various loose compartments (layers) with symbolic gifts, valuables, bride’s wealth, or festive dishes to transport them festively to the newly married couple. The construction with a tall, sturdy wooden or bamboo handle ensures that the loose baskets stay stable on top of each other while carrying them. Sometimes the baskets were painted. The unpainted examples are also called a tiffin carrier or stackable basket. They are distinguished by pure wickerwork techniques rather than paintings. Basket makers accomplished this by weaving bamboo strips (often light and darker/smoked bamboo) in specific patterns or symbols of good fortune. The wide handle made of a thick, split bamboo rail (split bamboo) is very characteristic of the more rural and purely functional baskets from China. This type of handle is resilient and extremely strong, intended to carry heavy meals or gifts. The wedding basket is carefully packed and insured for shipping.
