Bangle in Historic Shapes With Rubies & Diamonds in Gold, 1950s

The bangle here takes us to a warm summer night, a summer perhaps in Italy, near the sea. It's warm, yet not too oppressive, and twinkling stars populate a beckoning sky, stretched wide open over a rich landscape full of history. Crickets chirp, a scent of juniper and pine lingers in the air. The bangle is made of high-carat gold, which shines warm and precious. Its surface is richly decorated with engravings, in plant shapes that form historical ornaments. Towards the front side the hoop widens. To the right and left are the first diamonds and rubies, set in a lattice above a field underlaid with dark blue enamel. Then, in the center of the design, another, larger field is set, bearing another lattice of diamonds and rubies against a blue enameled background, like stars in a summer firmament. The sumptuous bangle is heavily crafted, and it is its heavy workmanship entirely of yellow gold that reveals that it was not, as one might at first think, created in the 19th century during the revivalist period. Rather, it is a child of the 20th century and was probably created in Southern Europe in the years following World War II. The forms of the past, recomposed into romantic motifs, became a new fashion in those years. We know numerous pieces of jewellery from Italy or even Portugal designed in this spirit. Therefore, even though this piece has no hallmarks, we assume that it was also created in this context. It is reminiscent of jewellery of the Rococo and neo-classical styles, but combines the individual elements into something quite unique and new. We discovered the bangle in Hamburg.
