BALZAC (Honoré de) - Lot 23

BALZAC (Honoré de) CÉSAR BIROTTEAU. Illustrated by Jacques Boullaire. Paris, Éditions Mornay, “Les Beaux Livres” series, 1929. Square 8vo (approx. 20.5 × 16 cm), 416 pp., paperback, decorated and printed in black and gray, printed spine, untrimmed. A BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF CÉSAR BIROTTEAU, THE FORTY-SIXTH VOLUME IN THE “LES BEAUX LIVRES” COLLECTION PUBLISHED BY ÉDITIONS MORNAY. The book is illustrated by Jacques Boullaire with 52 black-and-white illustrations, including the frontispiece portrait of César Birotteau, one insert, and 50 illustrations within the text, supplemented by vignettes and typographic ornaments. The illustrations, with their striking graphic vitality, complement this great Balzacian portrayal of Parisian commerce, bourgeois ambition, and bankruptcy particularly well: street scenes, shops, characters, and views of the Paris of *La Comédie humaine*. LIMITED EDITION OF 1,000 COPIES FOR SALE, distributed as follows: 3 copies on antique Japanese paper in a folio format, each containing a portion of Boullaire’s originals; 52 on Japanese paper; 40 on Holland paper; 50 on Montval paper reserved for the Viau y Zona bookstore in Buenos Aires; and 855 copies on Rives paper, numbered from 146 to 1,000. In addition, 75 non-commercial copies were printed. ONE OF THE 855 COPIES ON RIVES PAPER, THIS ONE NO. 717. Printing was completed on January 30, 1929, by the Coulouma printing house in Argenteuil, with the letterpress work entrusted to Coulouma and the lithography to Desjobert. COPY PRESERVED IN ITS ELEGANT PUBLISHER’S BINDING WITH FLAPS, a particularly attractive format for Mornay publications. Decorative cover is complete; interior has full margins and is untrimmed. Very good overall condition: a few slight signs of wear, small foxing spots or isolated stains, and minimal rubbing on the headbands and corners; interior fresh overall. A fine copy in its original condition.
