Baldomero Romero Ressendi (1922-1977), The Bandits, signed - Spanish

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 56 x 45 cm (unframed), 81 x 69 cm (framed). The painting captures a moment of popular excitement surrounding a group of Andalusian bandits, standing out against a luminous landscape. In the center, a horseman in a haughty pose dominates the composition, surrounded by cheering figures, highlighting the intensely colored clothing and the play of light that bathes their faces. The vigorous, impasto finish reveals the Expressionist influence of Romero Resendi, who uses free brushwork and warm colors to recreate a highly theatrical costumbrista scene. The mastery of light contrasts lends depth to the ensemble, while the festive atmosphere and exalted gestures evoke the strength of the Spanish popular temperament. The work is part of the neo-romantic movement of the 20th century, in which national traditions are revalued through painting with a narrative and vitalist accent.
