Phrenology Bust of L. N. Fowler, glazed porcelain, c. 1990 – United States Excellent porcelain bust that reproduces the classic Victorian phrenology head by L.N. Fowler, made of porcelain. On the skull the different areas of the brain are divided according to Fowler, segmented by black lines with the names of the psychic faculties in English inside each section. At the front of the base is the title of the work [PHRENOLOGY BY L. N. FOWLER] and at the back there is a small text by the scientist which translates to: “For thirty years I have studied the Skulls and living heads from all parts of the world, and I have found in every example that there is a perfect correlation between the conformation of a healthy skull of an individual and his own characteristics. To make my observations available I have prepared a Bust of superior form and have marked the divisions of the Organs according to my studies and varied experience. L. N. FOWLER.” At the bottom of the base there is a seal shaped like a mermaid accompanied by the place name where the piece was produced [Zeewolde NL – Eugene OR USA], Netherlands and United States. Long before modern psychology existed, there was phrenology: the Victorian belief that character could be read from the shape of a skull. Doctors had heads like this on their desks, each mapped into dozens of regions labeled, from love and intellect to energy and morality, as if the bumps and contours of the head contained the answers to a person’s nature. The Phrenology Head is a faithful replica of the original classic ceramic pieces published by L.N.
