Ring of Australian Opal / new In 925 Sterling Silver set Weight: 1.90 g 7.6 mm x 5.4 mm New and unworn Ring size: U 51 - 52 (sits exactly between) UK K 1/2 - L 1/2 US 5.9 Fr 11 - 12 Inner diameter: 16.35 mm Opal is a mineral from the mineral class of “Oxides and Hydroxides.” As an amorphous solid, opal (like glass) has no crystal structure and typically appears as a massive veining or nodular formation. Opals are processed exclusively into gemstones. The word Opal was borrowed from the Latin opalus or the Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for ‘precious stone’ and probably goes back to upala in Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, it was used to denote various rocks, while the early Magyars called opal mines opálbánya. Opals were already regarded as particularly valuable gemstones in antiquity, sometimes valued even higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote on this: „[…] to it belongs a fire of its own, finer than that in the Carbunculus, it possesses the purplish spark of the amethyst and the sea-green of the emerald and an absolutely incredible mix of light“ Shipping as insured registered letter
