A Conditional Rarity from the Republic of Texas Austin, Texas. Republic of Texas. 1841 $1. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ. No. 298. Plate B. Representative of the lowest denomination from this emission. This note lost most of its value shortly after it was issued, but nonetheless stands as a scarce denomination compared to most of its surviving peers in the present. Most of the notes we handle from the Republic of Texas represent denominations like the $20s and $50s which would have found some use in circulation as the value of the "Redback" dwindled amidst the economic uncertainties of the period that plagued the Republic of Texas. This example would have been worth roughly 2 to 4 cents in the early 1840s and would have found little use in commercial channels overall. To that end, small denomination notes from this emission are already rare and quality examples are few and far between with unsightly examples often the norm and riddled with impairments. To bidders, it takes little to recognize that this example is certainly not the norm by virtue of the grade assigned by PMG. Here a level of eye appeal and technical quality seldom ever encountered for the denomination make this the perfect piece for the collector looking to assemble an exceptional set of notes issued by the Republic of Texas. PMG comments "Cancelled." PMG Pop 2/1 Finer. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
