Son of Sultan Mahmud II, he ascended the throne at a young age and presided over the Tanzimat, the major programme of administrative, legal and social reforms that sought to modernise the Ottoman Empire. Educated in a European manner and fluent in French, Abdülmecid was a noted admirer of European culture, Western music and the arts. His reign also encompassed the Crimean War and the Treaty of Paris of 1856. A patron of the arts and European-style decorative objects, he was commemorated in a number of richly decorated portrait watches made for the Ottoman court, including examples signed Auguste Courvoisier & Cie, circa 1850. Philippe-Auguste Courvoisier (1803–1873) was a Swiss watchmaker and watch manufacturer based in La Chaux-de-Fonds. A member of the prominent Courvoisier watchmaking family, he was associated with his brother Henri-Louis in the firm Courvoisier Frères, established in 1842 as successor to Courvoisier & Cie. The firm was renowned for the production of high-quality and elaborately decorated watches, with an important clientele in the Ottoman Empire. Courvoisier watches made for the Ottoman market are particularly distinguished by their Turkish numerals, Islamic calendar indications and richly enamelled gold cases. Several important examples signed Auguste Courvoisier & Cie are preserved in international museum collections, including the Topkapı Palace Museum in Istanbul and the L. A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art in Jerusalem.
