Attributed to Valentino Panciera Besarel (1829-1902) a large carved walnut figural torchère, depicting a Jester, with humorous or grotesque expression, holding aloft a circular gallery coaster bowl, 137cm high, French, 19th century Valentino Panciera, known as Besarel (1829–1902), was a celebrated Italian woodcarver and sculptor born at Astragal di Forno di Zoldo, near Belluno. Trained partly at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, he became one of the leading figures in the nineteenth-century revival of Venetian Baroque carving, drawing particular inspiration from Andrea Brustolon (1662–1732). Besarel achieved international recognition through major exhibitions in Florence, Paris and Vienna, while his highly successful Venetian workshop attracted prestigious royal commissions, including extensive work for the Italian royal family at the Quirinale
