ATTRIBUTED TO SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (BRITISH 1769 - 1830) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN Oil on canvas 77 x 64cm (30¼ x 25in.) Provenance: ‘Wells’ according to inscription on stretcher; ‘M. Sullivan’ according to label verso; Private Collection Pennsylvania, USA until sold: Alderfers Auctioneers & Appraisers, Hatfield, Pennsylvania, USA, September 22nd 2016, Lot 0024; where purchased by the present owner: Private English Collection. It has been suggested that the sitter may be J.M.W. Turner from the very early years of the 19th century. He was elected a full Royal Academician in 1802 which was hugely important to him and this was possibly the one time when he could have been persuaded to sit for his portrait and Lawrence, his friend, the one artist who may have been permitted to do it. Turner was right handed; had blue eyes; a penetrating gaze; regularly wore his gloves for work and known for adopting a defensive posture.
