Pair of four-light candelabra in gilded bronze, Maison Millet in Paris France, late 19th century Height: 45 cm; width: 37 cm Condition: excellent gilded patina Rare and elegant pair of four-light candelabra in gilded bronze, from Maison Millet in Paris, refining the historicist taste of the late 19th century for Louis XV Rocaille forms. Founded in the 19th century, the Millet house established itself in Paris as one of the most esteemed names in artistic bronze, lighting, and prestige furniture. Each candelabrum features a particularly dynamic composition, composed of foliate scrolls, sinuous stems, and acanthus-leaf starts, the whole rising from an openwork base with a heavily sculpted decoration. The nervy shaft, with twisted, ascending lines, bears four arms deployed in an asymmetrical, highly dynamic design, each ending with a foliate bobèche and a floral-button-shaped knop/bobèche, a motif especially seductive that reinforces the naturalist and Rocaille spirit of the whole. The quality of chasing is evident in the alternating treatment of surfaces, sometimes satin, sometimes polished, which catches the light and highlights the reliefs of the decoration. The details of foliage, the swirls of the pedestal, and the overall suppleness of the line testify to careful execution, in perfect harmony with the Millet House’s reputation for finely worked bronzes and its decorative repertoire inspired by 18th-century French styles. Through their harmonious proportions, their highly ornamental design, and the richness of their gilding, these candelabra constitute a rare decorative ensemble, convincing in a classical interior as well as in a more eclectic or theatrical presentation. Their presence is striking without heaviness, thanks to the elongation of the shaft and the airy openness of the arms. The pieces are presented with an excellent patina, with warm, homogeneous gilding, preserving a very beautiful visual effect.
