Attributed to José Benlliure y Gil (1855–1937) - Moroccan Bereber Encampment

1. Technical sheet Author: Attributed to José Benlliure y Gil (1855–1937) School: Spanish / Valencian Era: Late 19th century – early 20th century Proposed dating: ca. 1895–1905 Suggested title: Moroccan Camp Technique: Oil on canvas later adhered to a rigid support Dimensions of the work: 55 × 74 cm Dimensions with frame: 70 × 89 cm Signature: Signed “J. Benlliure” in the lower right corner Character of the work: Possible preparatory study, advanced sketch, or composition left partially unfinished State: The work requires professional conservation-restoration intervention. It presents generalized craquelure, abrasions, localized losses and areas with loss of pictorial layer, particularly visible in the sky and in various sections of the foreground. The canvas is currently adhered to a rigid support. The present condition recommends stabilization and preliminary study by a restorer before any aesthetic intervention. 2. Description Interesting Orientalist composition attributed to José Benlliure y Gil, depicting a wide outdoor scene set in a North African environment. The composition is dominated by a large textile structure, probably a tent or pavilion, around which numerous figures dressed in traditional attire are grouped. To the right and left, new groups, animals, objects and small constructions are arranged, while in the background the landscape opens to a sequence of mountainous elevations under an extraordinarily bright sky. The true protagonist of the painting is not a particular figure, but the atmosphere of the camp. The artist dissolves figures, ground and architecture with a quick, fragmentary brushstroke rich in matter, allowing many elements to remain barely suggested. The predominance of whites, ochres, sands, blue-greys and delicate pinkish accents creates a highly luminous image, radically different from Benlliure’s other Orientalist interiors that are dark. 3. Stylistic and compositional analysis The possible relation to José Benlliure is especially interesting when comparing this work with his Orientalist production. Benlliure traveled through Algeria and Morocco, and from these contacts developed numerous scenes of markets, courtyards, cafés, popular types and North African gatherings. A particularly significant reference is The Moroccan Storyteller, a composition in which we also find an outdoor gathering, groups of people, tents and a wide mountainous landscape as a backdrop. The similarity does not imply that both works are versions of the same composition, but it does demonstrate that the concrete combination of camp, tents, characters and North African landscape belongs fully to the artist’s known repertoire. In our work, the central figures are not outlined with a closed drawing. The painter introduces whites, blues, violets, ochres and reds with independent touches, letting the viewing distance visually reconstruct the characters. The large central tent constitutes the main geometric axis of the composition. Its triangular shape directs the gaze toward the center of the scene, while the human groups generate a lower horizontal band of great dynamism. In the background, the mountains and sky are built with much more extended and soft layers, creating atmospheric depth. 4. Possible sketch or preparatory study character This is one of the most interesting aspects of the painting. The work presents a deliberately uneven degree of definition. The main figures receive enough color spots to establish posture, clothing and spatial relation. Other figures are barely indicated. The ground is built with dragging, scraping and accumulations of paint. Many shapes still appear to be in an intermediate phase between preparatory composition and final finish. Therefore it seems reasonable to consider that it could be an advanced preparatory study for a larger composition, or a work the artist chose not to complete to the usual finish of a marketable painting. This procedure is documented within Benlliure’s output. Sketches, studies and different versions of Orientalist compositions are known, showing that certain scenes could be developed through successive attempts before reaching a definitive formulation. The Casa-Museo José Benlliure itself preserves works in which certain areas show a less pronounced finish and are almost sketched, leading to them being regarded as studies or not fully finished compositions. However, this possible sketch condition must be carefully differentiated from the current conservation state. The work presents real losses of pictorial material that visually enhance the impression of an unfinished work. Without physical examination and technical study, it cannot be determined with absolute certainty which areas were deliberately left open by the painter and which have suffered later losses. 5. Signature and authorship hypothesis The painting appears signed in the lower right corner: “J. Benlliure” This signing formula is documented in works by José Benlliure y Gil. There are numerous oil paintings signed in this way, using only the initial of the first name and the surname. The attribution is especially interesting because it does not rest solely on the signature. There is also coherence between the work and the painter’s known repertoire in several aspects: - North African Orientalist thematics; - Composition with large groups of people; - Presence of tents and ephemeral architecture; - Mountain landscape in the background; - Quick and luminous brushwork; - Use of whites, earth tones, blues and pinks; - Synthetic treatment of the figures. For this reason, and in the absence of a certificate or complete documentary provenance, we consider it prudent to catalog it as: Attributed to José Benlliure y Gil (1855–1937). 6. Historical context, references and condition José Benlliure y Gil was one of the prominent figures of Valencian painting at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries. He trained in Valencia, later built an important international career and spent long periods in Rome. His contact with the north of Africa gave rise to a particularly appreciated Orientalist facet of his output. In these works markets, interiors, streets, cafés, camps and scenes of daily life appear. The painting often becomes more luminous and spontaneous, with a considerably freer brushstroke than the meticulous, preciosist fineness characteristic of other stages of his career. In the present work that freedom is especially evident. Certain faces are barely a dark blot surrounded by whites. Turbans, tunics and fabrics are defined by one or two brushstrokes. The landscape is built by broad overlays of blues, greys, earth tones and whites. The paint bears a strong physical presence and allows direct appreciation of the execution process. The work currently presents extensive craquelure, abrasions and localized losses of pictorial layer. There are zones where the underlying support is visible, especially in the sky and in various central and lower areas. An ancient intervention by adhesion of the canvas to a rigid support is also observed. For these reasons, the work needs professional restoration. A proper consolidation, controlled cleaning and reintegration of the gaps could considerably recover the chromatic continuity and the overall reading of the composition. Any intervention should be carried out only after checking the stability of the canvas adhesion, the condition of the ground and the existence of possible prior restorations. 7. Shipping and conditions The work will be shipped by a professional specialized company. A custom-made box and foam protections will be used, with special attention to its conservation status. We undertake international shipments to all destinations worldwide. As this is an old work that requires restoration, precautions during packaging and transport will be heightened. Shipments outside the European Union, international destinations or pieces that require special packaging may incur additional transport, customs or import costs, which will be borne by the buyer. The frame is delivered as a gift with the work and will not be the subject of any claim.
