ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN HAYLS (BRITISH CIRCA 1600-1679) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, SAID TO BE SIR ROBERT SHAFTO, BUST LENGTH, WEARING THE ROBES OF A SERJEANT-AT-LAW Oil on canvas, in a painted cartouche 75.9 x 63.5cm (29¾ x 25in.) Unframed Provenance: Sale, Christie's, London, 18 March 1988, lot 179 Sir Robert Shafto of Whitworth (1634-1705), Durham, the presumed sitter, was a barrister at law and Recorder of Newcastle. He was knighted in 1670, and created a Serjeant-at-Law in 1675. In 1661 he married Catherine, daughter and co-heir of Sir Thomas Widdington of Cheeseburn Grange, Northumberland.
