Provenance: Didier Aaron Gallery, where acquired by the family of the current owner in 1981 Sale Christie's, Paris Tableaux anciens et du XIXe siècle, 21 June 2012, lot 56 The Collection of George Hayburn When the present portrait was previously offered at auction it was noted that Jean-Jacques Petit suggested the attribution after examining the painting and that the inclusion of Montaigne's Essays was an acknowledgement of friendship, furthermore that the work could have been executed during the artist's time in Paris.
