- Attributed author: Giovanni Boldini (Ferrara, 1842 – Paris, 1931) - Title: PROFILE OF A LADY - Technique: pastel on stiff cardboard - Description: A refined female profile portrait executed in pastel on stiff cardboard, depicting a young woman with gathered, elegantly styled hair and a face turned to the left. The figure is built through a free and vibrant pastel technique, in which Boldini blends delicate color variations of the flesh with more energetic touches in the rendering of the hair and dress. The blue-gray background, treated with a loose, luminous stroke, helps isolate and enhance the profile of the young woman. The portrait and the refined characterization of the updo fit fully within Boldini’s exploration of the female portrait, a genre to which the artist dedicated a fundamental portion of his production. Having moved to Paris in 1871, Boldini became one of the leading figures in international portraiture of the Belle Époque. His body of work includes a significant quantity of works on paper, among which pastels, drawings, watercolors, and prints: the Giovanni Boldini Museum in Ferrara preserves about a thousand works on paper, as well as more than sixty paintings. The work is documented in the photographed historical catalog for lot no. 220, with the title “Profilo di donna,” the pastel technique, the dimensions 35 × 50 cm, and the signature in the lower right corner. - Provenance: Provenance: Italian private collection.
