Arturo Di Modica was an Italian sculptor who became a naturalized American (1941–2021). The work instantly became the most photographed and famous public statue in New York. Di Modica received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 1999 for his extraordinary contribution to the culture and history of the United States.
