Art Deco Brooch With Colombian Emerald & Diamonds in Platinum, ca. 1930

With a history of thousands of years of mining and appreciation as a gemstone, the emerald is one of the most important gemstones in cultural history. Already in pre-Christian times, emerald mines existed in Egypt, where the coveted green gemstone was mined. These were the stones which the ancient author Pliny already described in rapturous tones: "No colour is more pleasant to look at, for we also look at green herbs and foliage with eagerness; but the emerald all the more dear, because nothing greens greener that can be compared to it." In the 16th century, the Spanish discovered more mines in Colombia that yielded this distinctive stone. Even today, the products of these mines are considered the epitome of quality emerald. Such an emerald is the protagonist of this brooch from the Art Deco style period. An expert's report confirms its Colombian origin. It is a so-called "minor oil emerald"; the treatment usual for emeralds is limited to a minimum here. The 6.53 ct stone is of strong intensity and luminosity. Under the table it shows a jardin, whose crystalline reflections contribute to the luminous appearance of the stone. In the years around 1930, the emerald was set in the brooch presented here, which complements the gemstone's angular step cut with geometries typical of the period in the formal language of Art Deco. Platinum bars set with diamonds, milgrains and fine sawn details set the emerald in an appropriately high quality framing. With the help of a jewel screwdriver, the emerald can be unscrewed and was probably originally screwed onto a ring that is now lost. The brooch is a true gem, combining the most precious materials with fine craftsmanship. It comes with two independent appraisals on the value as well as the origin of the materials.
