Armand Meffre (1929–2009) - Quai IV - Sète 2001

Armand Meffre (1929–2009) French actor and painter. Quai IV, Sète (2001) Sète is not a mere subject for Armand Meffre: it is a place deeply linked to his life and his work. The port of Sète is one of the subjects most dear to Armand Meffre. Fascinated by its port environment, its quays, its boats and its installations, he reinterprets their shapes and colors, transforming the real landscape into powerful geometric compositions, on the border of abstraction. In Quai IV, Sète (2001), Meffre blends figuration and abstraction: quays, boats and masts transform into a vibrant geometric composition where color builds space. This painting perfectly illustrates his most modern period, where the port of Sète becomes almost a Cubist composition, deeply rooted in the Mediterranean universe that was so dear to him. A quintessential actor of theater and cinema, Armand Meffre has acted under the direction of major filmmakers alongside Philippe Noiret, Jean Rochefort or Gérard Depardieu. Trained in painting with master André Lhote, he developed a sensitive, luminous and deeply humane body of work. His canvases, imbued with tenderness and poetry, reveal a profoundly human gaze, between restrained emotion and sincere simplicity. A complete artist, each painting tells a story and moves with its authenticity. An artist of great talent with significant results in public sales.
