Armand Meffre (1929–2009) - Quai IV - Sète 2001

Armand Meffre (1929–2009), French actor and painter. Quai IV, Sète (2001) Sète is not a mere subject for Armand Meffre: it is a place deeply linked to his life and his work. The port of Sète is one of the subjects closest to Armand Meffre. Fascinated by its port environment, its quays, its boats and its installations, he reinterprets its forms and colors, transforming the real landscape into powerful geometric compositions, on the border of abstraction. In Quai IV, Sète (2001), Meffre blends figurative and abstract: quays, boats and masts transform into a vibrant geometric composition where color builds space. This canvas perfectly illustrates his most modern period, in which the port of Sète becomes almost a Cubist composition, deeply rooted in the Mediterranean universe so dear to him. Iconic actor of theater and cinema, Armand Meffre worked under the direction of major filmmakers alongside Philippe Noiret, Jean Rochefort or Gérard Depardieu. Trained in painting under the master André Lhote, he developed a sensitive, luminous and deeply human body of work. His paintings, imbued with tenderness and poetry, reveal a profoundly human gaze, between restrained emotion and sincere simplicity.
