Architectural ornament - A.Linnemann - 1850-1900 - Mascaron fence, Vondelpark.

A rare and original historical architectural fragment originating from the monumental gateway of the Vondelpark in Amsterdam. This beautiful cast-iron mask is a so-called mascaron or grotesque head, designed in the classical Green Man style. The face is beautifully composed of detailed acanthus leaves and floral motifs. At the lower edge (the beard), stylized acanthus fruits adorn the ironwork. This particular mask was designed in 1883 by the well-known German architect Alexander Linnemann (1839-1902) for the construction of the monumental gateway on Stadhouderskade in Amsterdam for the International Trade Exposition (the World's Fair). The object is thus exactly 143 years old and forms an important piece of Amsterdam's Rijksmonument heritage. Because Linnemann was an architect and glass artist, he did not cast the mask with his own hands. The design was sent to a professional art and iron foundry J.H. Moria (led by Johann Heinrich Moria) in Frankfurt am Main (Germany). This type of ornament (mascaron or Green Man / Bacchus in lush leaves) dates from the heyday of Historicism/Neo-Renaissance, 1870-1900. All these historic fences are, because of their high art-historical and typological value, officially designated as Rijksmonuments in 1996. Between 1999 and 2010 there was a major renovation of Vondelpark, and the monumental fences were restored to their former splendor by smederij Rombout and kunstsmederij Van der Vegt. The latest photos were taken by Bert Brand of the Spatial Planning Service (DRO) of the City of Amsterdam. The article appeared in 1977 in a trade journal (name unknown) or Municipal Yearbook. Mascaron is included with a wooden shield. Regarding depth, the thickness of the mask is indicated.
