Royal Copenhagen – Nils Thorsson – ceramic design pendant – original Anton Michelsen box – Denmark Special and highly decorative vintage Danish design pendant from Royal Copenhagen, executed in glazed ceramic/porcelain and presented in an original jewelry box from the renowned Copenhagen house Anton Michelsen. The oval pendant has an ivory-white ground with a subtly ribbed edge. The front is rich and almost sculpturally decorated with gold-colored relief structures, combined with raised burgundy ornaments and characteristic red-, purple- and blue-green glaze effects. The result is a striking artistic piece in which ceramics and jewelry design meet beautifully. The design belongs to the experimental Danish ceramics from the period of Nils Thorsson (1898–1975), one of the leading designers and artistic heads of Royal Copenhagen/Aluminia. Thorsson played a central role in the development of the famous Tenera- and Baca-series and was influential on Danish ceramic modernism of the 1960s and 1970s. From design history there are also pieces of jewelry documented in which designs by Nils Thorsson for Royal Copenhagen were combined with mounts from the renowned Danish court jeweler Anton Michelsen. This pendant is therefore offered within that special Royal Copenhagen/Michelsen context. The back is clearly bearing the original Royal Copenhagen factory mark, consisting of the crown, the characteristic three wave lines and the inscription DENMARK. On the metal pendant eye there is also a separate triangular mark. Original A. Michelsen jeweler’s box An important plus is the accompanying original dark blue presentation/jeweler’s box. On the inside it states: “A. MICHELSEN – JEWELLERS BY APPOINTMENT – ESTABLISHED 1841” A. Michelsen was among the leading Danish silver and jeweler houses and worked during the 20th century with prominent Danish designers and artists. The original box therefore forms a particularly fitting presentation for this Royal Copenhagen pendant and increases the collectability of the whole.
