Antoine-Émile Plassan (French, 1817–1903). Signed lower right: "PLASSAN" Landscape with Boats. Oil on panel. 24 x 18,5 cm (+ frame) Good overall condition; the wooden support is stable and the paint layer remains vibrant with no signs of flaking or cracking. Housed in a carved, period-appropriate gilded stucco frame This exquisite cabinet piece by the celebrated French master Antoine-Émile Plassan captures a serene, atmospheric river landscape, exemplifying the romantic appreciation of nature typical of 19th-century French plein-air painting. The composition is beautifully balanced by dense, mature trees flanking the riverbanks, casting deep, rich reflections onto the water's surface. In the background, daylight breaks through a soft, cloud-swept blue sky, illuminating the center of the river where small figures in boats dot the peaceful waters. Plassan’s mastery of light and delicate brushwork is perfectly preserved on this intimate wooden panel, showcasing the stylistic bridge between academic realism and the poetic naturalism of the Barbizon school. Plassan, a recipient of the Légion d'honneur and a regular exhibitor at the prestigious Paris Salon, is highly collected for his fine detailing and luminous textures. This charming landscape, presented in a magnificent historical frame, is a stellar addition for collectors of 19th-century European art. Offered with no reserve price.
