„The sapphire — the gem of autumn, the blue of the autumn sky — is a symbol of truth, sincerity, and constancy. Less vivid than its sister gem, the ruby, it typifies calm and tried affection, not ardent passion; it is therefore appropriate to the autumn season, when the declining sun no longer sends forth the fiery rays of summer but shines with a tempered brilliancy.“ – George Frederick Kunz, The Curious Lore of Precious Stones, (Philadelphia & London: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1913), p. 324. The cultural significance of the sapphire fits in wonderfully with this ring. Rings with three gemstones are also known as trilogy rings: They are sometimes attributed a special meaning. The three gemstones are said to represent a shared past, present and future. Here, a dark and yet clearly blue, non-inky sapphire shines between two large old-cut diamonds of approx. 0.58 and 0.75 ct. The gemstones are held only by delicate prongs, an innovation from the second half of the 19th century. This allows more light to reach them, and their fire and brilliance are shown to their best advantage. In any case, the design of the ring itself is simple and allows the precious stones to take precedence. Two elegantly curved clasps appear to hold the sapphire and the diamonds, joining together to form a narrow ring band. This high-quality ring was created around 1895, as can be seen not only from its design but also from the details of its execution and the gemstone cuts. It is in very good condition.
