Antique Ring with Colombian Emeralds & Diamonds in Gold & Silver, ca. 1920

"We already look at the green of herbs and leaves with pleasure. But we prefer to look at emeralds, because their green is the most beautiful of all. Moreover, they are the only gems that fill the eyes without saturating them; indeed, when the eyes are weakened by exertions of other kinds, they are strengthened again by looking at emeralds [...] for their soft green dispels the dullness of them." (Nat. Hist. 37,16) Beauty and effect of the precious stones occupied already the people of the antiquity. The quotation reproduced here comes from Pliny the Elder, a Roman scholar from Como. In the year 77 AD, he compiled the knowledge of nature of that time in a work, the Naturalis Historia or Natural History - and his description of the emerald is just as true today as it was 2000 years ago. This ring is a sparkling testimony to this, for in its center shines a natural emerald from Colombia in a wonderfully warm-toned green. The gemstone is set in silver and surrounded by a total of sixteen diamonds, with a total weight of about 0.88 carats and white bright light as a wide frame around the setting of the green center stone. The ring was created in the years around 1920 and found its way to us from Havelland. It is beautifully preserved and comes with a detailed appraisal from the German Society for Gemstone Appraisal Idar-Oberstein, which confirms the quality of its materials
