Antique Ring with a Shell Cameo in a Gold, Germany, c. 1910

We primarily associate gemstone jewellery with the 19th century and the stylistic periods of Classicism and Historicism. However, these carved depictions continued to enjoy great popularity well beyond those periods. This ring is a good example of the enduring popularity of cameos well into the 20th century. The ring features an oval profile portrait carved from a seashell in its center. The cameo depicts a youthful lady whose luxuriant curly hair is adorned with flowers. This may represent the goddess Flora. The cameo was likely carved from the shell of a sea snail in the Bay of Naples. The delicate setting, complete with a band of warm, lustrous yellow gold, makes the cameo suitable for wearing. Based on its hallmarks, it was most likely crafted in Germany. This antique ring c. 1910 is a beautiful piece of jewellery that continues to captivate even today.
