Antique Ribbon Bow Brooch with Diamonds in Silver on Gold, c. 1890

A loosely tied bow is the centerpiece of this brooch. An ivy leaf is draped to the left of it, while to the right it merges into flower stems, as if it were actually a fanciful bouquet blown by the wind. The unusual motif is set all over with approximately 0.82 ct of old-cut and rose-cut diamonds, which sparkle in silver on gold. The brooch was created around 1890, at a time when jewellery production had reached an unprecedented high and the wearing of jewellery was more widespread than ever before. The elegant lady of the Belle Époque had several brooches and pins for every occasion: to adorn her high collars in the early hours of the day, to gather luxurious lace on her afternoon dress, and of course opulent corsage ornaments for the evening. This brooch has an unusual function today, as it was not only designed to adorn its wearer: it also has a hook on the back, into which a pocket watch was once hung. For this purpose, pocket watches often had luxurious decorated faces that were worn to the front while the dial rested on the dress. Today, of course, a pendant can also be attached to the brooch, such as a pearl on a silver eyelet; or the piece itself can be worn as a pendant on a chain. There are no limits to your imagination here!
