Toutes les enchères / Bijouterie & Joaillerie / Antique Gold Ring with Rubies from Burma & Diamonds, Germany c. 1900

Rings featuring a row of gemstones set across the finger were particularly popular c. 1900. They usually consisted of three or five stones set in a colourful row: rubies, sapphires, opals, or emeralds, almost always combined with diamonds. However, the choice of gemstone was not merely aesthetic; in Gemlore, the “language of jewels,” certain messages could also be conveyed in this way. This ring is set with rubies and diamonds. Because of its colour, the ruby is traditionally associated with passion: “Ruby is passion,” as the famous British painter Sir Edward Burne-Jones once said. Combined with diamonds—which, due to their hardness, have been associated with eternity for centuries—this creates a romantic message. All of the ring’s stones are hand-cut and set in gold. It is particularly noteworthy that these are untreated rubies from Burma—traditionally the finest source of these brilliant red stones. The diamonds, too, captivate with their beautiful fire. The ring, which we discovered in Hamburg, is in very good condition. Thanks to its particularly delicate and slender design, it is comfortable to wear even in everyday life and is ideal as an engagement ring.
