Antique Art Nouveau Photo Locket With Emeralds & Diamonds, c. 1900

One of the major themes of Art Nouveau was the female figure. Especially in France Art Nouveau designers celebrated the beauty of women in countless pieces of jewellery. Their soft forms and free-flowing hair were symbols of youth and life. This pendant in high-carat yellow gold picks up on this motif. We see a young lady depicted in relief on the cover. The beauty's lost gaze is directed at something that remains hidden from us as viewers of the pendant. Her hair is covered by a headscarf that probably belongs to a French costume. The figure is set in a tondo, with sparkling rose cut diamonds and three natural emeralds accentuating the relief. Inside, the locket allows two photographs to be stored. We have added a matching gold chain to this graceful piece of jewellery so that it can be worn immediately. It came to us from southern Germany.
