AUDOT (Jacques-Christophe). Noted Songs of the Very Venerable Fraternity of Freemasons, preceded by a few poems suitable to the subject and a march. All gathered and arranged by Fr. Naudot. S.l. [Béziers], Société de musicologie de Languedoc, s.d (1986). Small-8vo, 92 p. Paperback with cover of hand-marbled paper by the dominoterie L'Astragale (Capens). The title vignette, adorned with the square and compasses, is printed on laid paper and affixed to the first board. Reprint in facsimile of the engraved edition dated 1737, after the copy in the library of the Société de musicologie de Languedoc, printed on laid paper in a small number of copies (not justified). Jacques-Christophe Naudot (c. 1690-1762), a virtuoso flutist and Parisian composer, was one of the first French musicians to be initiated. His collection, entirely engraved (text and music), is the oldest French Freemason songbook. He translates into French the songs of the Constitutions (1723) by James Anderson (c. 1679-1739). The First Collection opens with Norma morum, Latin couplets followed by a “translation in verse by M. Gobin.” There follow an Apology, a Quatrain and a Dream, then the “March of the Free Masons” by Naudot for hunting horns, flutes and oboes, with figured bass. Then the songs of the Masters, of the Overseers, of the Companions and of the Apprentices, notated in three voices with choir. Their couplets recount the legendary history of the Royal Art: Jabal, Noah, Nimrod, the Tower of Babel, Moses, the Temple of Solomon, Vitruvius. Two parodies of the March close the section, one praising the healing of Louis XV (1710-1774) (“C'est Louis que je voi”). The Second Collection brings together an acrostic and twenty-four songs. It includes “The misanthrope received Freemason,” “Three times three,” “O filii et filiae,” “To the health of our masonesses,” “Comus cannot from the table,” as well as a dialogued song “by Brother Fréron” where a sister answers the Worshipful Master. Cover in good condition, interior fresh. Dry stamp of the Pierre Menvel Tichadel library (1943-2020) under the title.
