Born in Eberbach, Germany, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Albert Oehlen, whose influence is associated with a broader questioning of conventional painting. Based in Düsseldorf, Breunig creates complex compositions that explore the relationship between image-making, abstraction and the possibilities of the painted surface. His S-Works: Specialized series, developed during the 2010s, comprises paintings executed using oil, charcoal and graphite on canvas. These works feature energetic, interwoven lines and layered marks, producing compositions that appear spontaneous and unruly while retaining a carefully considered structure.
