A very rare ancient Roman military phalera, 1–3 AD Interesting piece with a top patina! See images. A Roman military phalera was a sculpted, disk-shaped medal awarded to soldiers or entire units for acts of bravery and distinguished service. Crafted from gold, silver, bronze, or glass, sets of these decorations were mounted on leather harnesses and worn on the chest during military parades. Phalerae often depicted protective or powerful mythological figures and deities, such as Medusa, Hercules, Minerva, or Mars. The iconic, repeating designs served both as decorations of honor and powerful talismans. Weight: 20.53 Gram Height: 25.5 mm Width: 24.1 mm Quality: See images for own impression and provenance From a private collection inherited from my grandfather, who built the collection in the 1960s.
