Background Information: This silver antoninianus of Gallienus was struck at Antioch during his reign from A.D. 253 to 268. The obverse bears the legend GALLIENVS AVG and depicts the emperor with a radiate and cuirassed bust facing right. The radiate crown is characteristic of the imperial portrait used for the antoninianus denomination. The reverse bears the legend SOLI INVICTO, “To the Unconquered Sun”, with PXV in the field or exergue. Sol is depicted standing right with his head turned left, raising one hand and holding a globe. The solar deity was closely associated with concepts of universal power, victory and divine protection, making Sol Invictus an important figure in the religious and political imagery of later 3rd-century imperial coinage. Antioch was one of the principal cities and minting centres of the eastern Roman provinces. Coins produced there circulated through extensive commercial and military networks, while their imperial portraits and reverse imagery communicated official messages to soldiers and civilians. The antoninianus itself became one of the characteristic denominations of the 3rd-century Roman monetary system. Gallienus ruled during the Crisis of the Third Century, initially alongside his father Valerian I and later as sole emperor. His reign was marked by external invasions, internal usurpations and the fragmentation of imperial authority. As a coin made for monetary circulation during this turbulent period, this antoninianus forms a tangible connection to the economic, religious and political life of the 3rd-century Roman Empire."
