Ancient Roman, Empire Marble Marble Head - 16 cm

Small marble head, youthful and beardless, with a cap-like hairstyle. On the forehead, parallel, carved, combed strands, the calotte as a mass of lock-like plasticity. Eyes almond-shaped with heavy upper lid, smooth and without iris or pupil bore. Small mouth with sharply incised angles, cheeks laid flat. These features – combed forehead hair, flat face, and bore-free eyes – are stylistically comparable with gallo-Roman heads of the 1st–2nd century AD. Occiput and calotte clearly weathered, with sugary-grain texture and brownish discolorations; the face better preserved – a condition of preservation that occurs with uneven ground support.
