Background Information: This pair of bronze finger rings dates to the Roman Imperial period and represents two distinct styles of Roman personal jewellery. One ring features a broad oval bezel engraved with a stylised leaf motif, while the second is fitted with a raised circular socket bezel that originally held an inset, such as glass, a gemstone, or another decorative material, which is now lost. Both forms were widely used throughout the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. Bronze rings were worn by men and women across the Roman Empire as practical ornaments and personal possessions. Decorated bezels could display geometric or vegetal motifs, while socket rings offered an affordable alternative to precious-metal jewellery set with coloured stones. Such rings were everyday accessories, reflecting individual taste as well as contemporary fashions. These rings were cast in bronze and carefully finished by hand. The engraved bezel demonstrates the use of simple incision techniques, while the socket ring illustrates the specialised manufacture of stone-set jewellery. Comparable examples have been recovered from Roman settlements, military forts, villas, and cemeteries throughout the Empire. Such rings were traded across large distances, reaching regions such as present-day Germany, France, Britain, and the Netherlands. Dating to the height of the Roman Imperial period, these rings reflect the diversity of Roman jewellery production and the widespread availability of personal adornment in bronze. Together they provide a direct and tangible connection to the people of antiquity, where objects of this kind formed an important part of everyday dress and accompanied their owners throughout daily life."
