Background Information: Based on the supplied inscription and attribution, this bronze coin is identified as an issue of Diocletian, Roman emperor from A.D. 284 to 305, rather than Maximianus. The obverse legend IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS AVG identifies Diocletian and records his imperial titles. His reign was a decisive period of political and administrative reorganisation following the instability of the 3rd century. The reverse bears the legend CONCORDIA MILITVM, meaning “harmony of the soldiers”. This theme emphasised unity between the emperor and the Roman army and formed part of the official imagery used to express military loyalty and stable imperial government. Such concepts became especially significant under the Tetrarchy, the system of shared imperial rule developed under Diocletian. Bronze coinage was produced on a large scale through the organised network of Roman imperial mints and circulated throughout the provinces. Coins served as everyday currency while simultaneously distributing imperial portraits, titles and political messages among soldiers, merchants and civilians across the Roman world. Dating to the late 3rd or early 4th century A.D., this coin belongs to a transformative period in Roman history. As an object made for ordinary monetary circulation, it forms a tangible connection to the economic, military and political life of the Late Roman Empire.
