Background Information: This Gallo-Roman coarse ware pottery vessel features a rounded body, pronounced shoulders, a short, slightly tapering neck and a thickened, moulded rim. Its compact base and substantial proportions reflect the practical ceramic traditions of Roman Gaul. The contrasting grey and dark grey surfaces give the vessel a distinctive appearance associated with ancient pottery production and firing techniques. During the Roman Imperial Period, coarse ware pottery was an essential component of everyday domestic life. Vessels of this kind were used for storing foodstuffs, holding liquids and other household purposes. Their durable construction and practical shapes made them suitable for regular use in Roman provincial households, rural settlements and agricultural communities. Gallo-Roman pottery production was organised around regional workshops, where skilled potters shaped vessels from locally available clay using established wheel-throwing and kiln-firing techniques. Grey and dark ceramic surfaces were commonly produced through firing conditions with a limited oxygen supply. Such wares circulated through local markets and regional trade networks, connecting settlements across Roman Gaul and neighbouring provinces, including areas of present-day France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The vessel's carefully formed profile, substantial body and distinctive rim illustrate the functional craftsmanship of Gallo-Roman ceramic production. It provides a direct and tangible connection to everyday life in the Roman provinces, where pottery vessels were indispensable objects used in domestic and agricultural activities."
