Toutes les enchères / Argenterie & Orfèvrerie / An extremely fine early George III Dish Cross made in London in 1764

The Dish Cross is of the typical "X" form with sliding supports, which move along the arms so that different sized dishes could be accommodated. The circular base of each support is decorated with gadrooning and pierced with tear drop motifs. The top section of the support, where the dish would have been placed, is also pierced with raying lobes and is decorated with ribbing and a gadrooned border. The section, where the supports slide along the arms, is pierced with trellis work and the arms each terminate in a stylised flower head. The central baluster burner, would have contained the wick and paraffin, and is decorated with swirl lobing and bold beads. The beautifully shaped cover has a gadrooned rim, interspersed with foliate motifs. Both the cover and burner base are engraved with a contemporary Crest. The Dish Cross is modelled in a beautiful design and is in excellent condition. This piece is fully marked on the burner and part marked on the arms, supports and burner cover. It is marked in no less than eight separate places ! This piece is of a very good weight, which is not surprising as these silversmiths produced items of the finest quality from workshops in St. Martin Le Grand. John Sebille, was of Huguenot descent, as listed by Evans. Dish Crosses date from the middle of the Eighteenth century and were used on the table and sideboard to keep dishes, and their contents, hot. In addition they were used to stand cold dishes on, so that the surface of the table was not damaged. Length: 13.25 inches, 33.13 cm. Height, to the top of the supports: 4 inches, 10 cm. Weight: 26 oz.
