Toutes les enchères / Argenterie & Orfèvrerie / An exceptional and very unusual George III "fLARED" tANKARD MADE IN

The Tankard is of a very rare design and after discussion, it may well have been a special commission and, therefore, unique. The Tankard is of a substantial size and displays a circular main body which has a very unusual flared, spreading, lower section with reeded moulding at the foot and applied horizontal girdle around the lower section. The sides rise to a slightly everted rim and a stepped, high domed, cover also decorated with thread bands. The plain scroll handle terminates, at the base, in a heart shaped device and displays shaped capping, and a pendant drop, below the hinge. The unusual cast “chair back” thumbpiece displays a raying shell at the top, a design of thumb piece we had not seen before. The front of the main body is engraved with an Armorial surrounded by one of the finest cartouches we have seen from this period including beautiful flowing scroll work, in addition to profile male busts on each side, a raying shell above (echoing the thumbpiece) and a detailed female mask below. The engraving has been executed to an exceptional standard. The Armorial is that as used by the Badd family of Cams Hall, Fareham, Hampshire. The Tankard is of an outstanding weight, and is in excellent condition, having seen very little use over all of the years. It is fully marked on the base and the underside of the hinged cover and maintains a wonderful colour. Charles Wright was a very fine silversmith who had been apprenticed to Thomas Whipham, 3 rd June, 1747. He had workshops at 2, Ave Maria Lane when this wonderful tankard was made. Charles Wright was elected to the Livery of the Goldsmiths Company in 1758, the Court in 1777 and was appointed to the prestigious position of Warden 1783-85. Height, to the top of the thumbpiece: 8.4 inches, 21 cm. Base Diameter: 6 inches, 15 cm. Weight: 41oz.
