An antique stick pin mounted with a yellow gold figure of Eros, the figure represented standing nude and playing a syrinx, or Pan pipes, held before his chest, finely modelled in the round, with projecting wings behind the shoulders and the legs drawn closely together, Hellenistic or Roman, probably Italian, later mounted The figure is ancient in type and is remarkably close to the gold figural pin depicting Eros playing the syrinx in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. Bj 469. The Louvre example, probably Italian and dated broadly to the Hellenistic or Roman Imperial period, preserves an apparently ancient pin-shank and is stylistically extremely similar in the modelling of the figure, wings, musical instrument and supporting element beneath the feet. The correspondence is unusually close and raises the possibility that the present object may preserve more of its ancient form than a simple nineteenth-century remounting would suggest 7.5cm long, 5 grams, presented in an old monogrammed tooled leather jeweller’s case marked Martin & Michelon, Montpellier
