This splendid historical map is the "Nov Orbis sive America Septentrionalis divisa per sua Regna Provinc: et Insul:", a famous geographical chart of North America created by the renowned German cartographer Georg Matthäus Seutter (and subsequently published in various editions and reduced versions also by his son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter) around the mid-18th century (circa 1730-1750). The map is part of the famous Atlas Minor and is characterized by several extraordinary historical and cartographic elements: • California as an island: Following a widespread but erroneous geographic belief of the time, the California peninsula is shown entirely detached from the mainland as if it were a huge elongated island. • The colonial division: The territories of North America are hand-divided and colorized to delineate the colonial possessions of the European powers of the time, in particular Spanish Florida, the vast Nouvelle France (New France/Canada and Louisiana) and the British colonies along the Atlantic coast. • The Fretum Anian (Strait of Anian): In the upper left, in the still-unexplored northwestern area, the legendary northwest passage is alluded to. • The decorative cartouche: In the upper left corner sits a rich baroque-style cartouche, topped with the Latin title and flanked by allegorical illustrations depicting Native Americans and the exotic fauna of the New World. On the lower margin stands the original editorial note: "Augsp. in Verlag bey Albr. Georg Zötter, Geogr. in Augspurg" SEUTTER, Georg Matthaus (1678-1757).
