A member of the French Academy, he dedicated over twenty years of his life to composing the monumental work Grande Flore en couleurs de la France. Georges de Layens (1834–1897): He was a noted naturalist and above all one of the fathers of modern beekeeping. He developed the eponymous "Layens" hive, a horizontal-growth model still widely used in Europe (especially in Spain).
