A member of the French Academy, he devoted over twenty years of his life to the compilation of the monumental work "Grande Flore en couleurs de la France." Georges de Layens (1834–1897): He was a noted naturalist and above all one of the fathers of modern beekeeping. He developed the eponymous "Layens’ Hive," a horizontal-development model still widely used in Europe (especially in Spain).
